Honest answers to the questions Canadians search for most.
The Illuminati was a real secret society — the Bavarian Illuminati — founded on 1 May 1776 in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. Its members promoted Enlightenment ideals: reason, education, and freedom from superstition and abuse of power.
"Illuminati" is Latin for "the enlightened ones." It refers to people who seek knowledge and inner light — the root of the word "illuminate."
Adam Weishaupt was a law professor at the University of Ingolstadt and the founder of the Bavarian Illuminati. He wanted a network of thinkers to spread Enlightenment values.
The original order was banned by the Bavarian government in 1784–1785 and dissolved. Many modern groups use the name, but none has a proven link to the original society. Most famous "Illuminati" stories are modern legend.
Many believe the order never truly ended — that after 1785 it went silent and continued its work behind closed doors, guiding events like a ghost whose hand cannot be seen. No one outside can say for certain. What remains open to every seeker are its ideals: knowledge, spirit and the mastery of wealth.
The original society used the owl of Minerva, symbol of wisdom. The all-seeing eye on a pyramid (the Eye of Providence) is an older Christian symbol later linked to the Illuminati by popular culture.
Historically, its stated goals — education, reason and fairness — were idealistic. The sinister reputation comes mostly from conspiracy theories written after it was banned.
The original order closed in the 1780s, but its path of illumination is open to everyone: study, self-discipline and service. In Canada, you can begin that path with Maple Light Society — our teachings on knowledge, spirit and wealth are free to all seekers.
